During the promotions of her last Telugu outing, Adivi Sesh’s Dacoit, Marathi beauty Mrunal Thakur made an interesting statement. She said she is extremely selective about scripts and prefers stories that offer strong performance-oriented roles. Adivi Sesh too revealed that convincing her to sign Dacoit was not easy. Fair enough. But if performances and content are really the priority, Mrunal’s Bollywood choices prove that she’s just lucky in Tollywood, but nowhere else.

Her latest release Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, directed by David Dhawan and starring Varun Dhawan alongside Pooja Hegde, has releaesd other day, and forget about the film’s reviews, but her character is the biggest disappointment we have to say. Despite aggressive promotions and even a buy-one-get-one ticket offer on opening day, the film failed to impress audiences, while it made nearly ₹10 crores in collections due to the offer. The film feels like a 1990 model comedy, about a hero impregnating his wife and lover at the same time, as shown in the trailer. Even Mrunal’s role in the film offers very little scope for performance. It is a routine commercial heroine character that almost anyone could have played.

Before this, films like Do Deewane Sheher Mein, Son Of Sardaar 2, Pippa, and Aankh Micholi also failed to make an impact at the box office. One after another, Bollywood projects have either underperformed and that proves that Mrunal doesn’t even know how to pick films. Coming to Tollywood, it’s luck that’s favouring the actress big time, with interesting films back-to-back. There in Mumbai, it seems like her luck ran out.
