Analysis:
A good character fails to make a strong impact as the casting choice goes wrong. It often leads to the film failing at the box office. At the same time, a terrific character can elevate a regular character which had some flaws in writing as well. Such actors don't need much and they can excel if they get a decent role and a good storyline. Naveen Polishetty is one such actor who has tons of talent. He waited for the right offers for a long time and showed everyone what he is capable of with movies like 'Agent Sai Srinivasa Athreya' and 'Jathi Ratnalu'. We cannot imagine any other actor in these movies. It is safe to say that his performance elevated these films and turned them into blockbusters. 'Miss Shetty Mr Polishetty' can be termed as Naveen's show from start to end. Director Mahesh Babu wrote a story which has an ample scope for comedy. Keeping the other roles aside, he created a character that suits Naveen and wrote some hilarious lines. This is all Naveen needed and he went berserk in the movie. Though there are other attractions in the film, Naveen is the driving force and the 150-minute movie runs smoothly if we connect to the actor.
The story of 'Miss Shetty Mister Polishetty' has similarities to 'Vicky Donor'. It has an adult touch but it is a love story. The movie is about a girl who doesn't believe in marriage but wants to become a mom with the help of a sperm donor. She doesn't want a person who has good jeans but searches for a guy with a good nature too. She finds a standup comedian and what happens after that is the point of the story. A girl who doesn't want to get attached emotionally ends up connecting with the person who she wants to be the sperm donor and the emotional turmoil has been showcased quite well. Though the movie starts from the heroine's point of view and ends from her side, it is the hero who drives the movie in the middle. Just like how he brings life into the heroine's character, he brings energy into the movie which starts off slowly and gives a lot of entertainment.
The concept of Stand-Up comedy which is well known internationally and nationally is considered as an unsuccessful concept in Telugu cinema. Though a lot of shows happen in Hyderabad, it is true that they don't connect with the common audience. The portrayal of standup comedy in movies too did not impress the audience till date. But Naveen will change your opinion on standup comedy through 'Miss Shetty Mr. Polishetty'. He makes you wonder if standup is really this amazing or is it just Naveen. Standup comedy is all about making fun of normal situations by giving a context to them. It needs a lot of timing from the comedian and Naveen got it spot on. Mahesh's writing played a key role too as they both delivered some superb punches. The movie provides a lot of entertainment as the hero thinks that the interest the heroine is showing towards him is love. The director dealt with the twist quite well and the second half becomes a bit serious compared to the first half. Though Naveen tries to do his best to entertain the audience, the movie doesn't move forward which is a minus point. But the emotional turn at the end touches the hearts of people. With the emotions working out well, the viewers walk out with the feeling of having watched a good film. With the adult touch in the movie and the scenes related to it, the family audience may feel uncomfortable at times but you will definitely enjoy this film.
Performances:
When we watch Naveen Polishetty, we get a feeling that we wasted a lot of years without seeing him on the big screens. He is a live wire who entertains the audience every time he is seen on the screen. He has the ability to convert normal dialogues into punch lines and normal scenes into engaging sequences. No other actor can make this film as enjoyable as Naveen did. He acted very naturally as a standup comedian and looked like a boy-next-door throughout the movie. He is the show stealer of the movie and even dominates Anushka Shetty. The star actress acted according to her character in a subtle way. Her screen presence suited the role where she shouldn't show a lot of emotions. This role suits her age too but her look is quite unnatural. While the rest of the characters appeared natural, there was something very artificial about her look. Her fans might be disappointed with her dull demeanor in the movie. Nassar, Murali Sharma, Tulasi and Jayasudha got less screen time but they showcased their class in this movie. Abhinav Gomatham is entertaining as the hero's friend while Soniya as Anushka's friend is quite good.
Technicians:
The technical team gave a brilliant output for this film. Gopi Sundar's music had a lot of feel while Radhan's songs went with the flow of the film. Nirav Shah's cinematography is quite attractive as the visuals are very pleasant. The production values are top-notch and debut filmmaker Mahesh Babu showcased his talent as both writer and director. It is not easy to make a two-and-a-half-hour movie with such a simple story. Many makers get excited with the idea and showcase flashes but fail at the end. Mahesh proved to be different from the rest and made sure that the film is not boring at all. Though his writing appeared a bit weak, he used Naveen well in order to cover his flaws.
Verdict: A Complete Naveen Polishetty Show!
Rating: 3/5
