Akkineni Nageswara Rao’s influence on Telugu cinema continues to inspire generations. Known for bringing romance and social stories alive on screen, ANR also founded Annapurna Studios, shifting the Telugu film industry from Madras to Hyderabad. On his 101st birth anniversary, Nagarjuna spoke about his father’s legacy, the early days of the studio, and plans for a biopic.

Nagarjuna recalled his father’s determination. “When the studio was being built, I wasn’t in the industry yet. My father wanted the industry in Hyderabad, and that vision stayed with me,” he said. After Shiva and Geetanjali, Nagarjuna chose to shoot in Hyderabad despite limited infrastructure, bringing actors from Chennai and taking lower fees to support producers. ANR always believed in giving back to the industry and society that shaped him.

Annapurna Studios has grown into a hub of modern technology, with Dolby sound, virtual production, and motion capture. Annapurna College continues to train technicians working across the industry. The studio is preparing multiple projects next year, including Nagarjuna’s 100th film, Akhil’s Lenin, and other films with new talent. For Nagarjuna, the studio holds memories of his father, from birthday celebrations filled with fans to quiet family evenings.

Regarding the biopic, Nagarjuna confirmed that plans are underway. “We are discussing how to write it and make it engaging. Once finalized, I will share details,” he said. He also noted the changes since ANR’s time, highlighting how Chaitanya, Akhil, and Supriya are bringing in new technology while keeping the studio’s spirit alive. Fans can look forward to a film that honors ANR’s life and lasting impact on Telugu cinema.
