Just six months ago, filmmakers felt there had to be heavy action, romance, and cringe content for a film to click. But the likes of Maa Inti Bangaram, Korean Kanakaraju, Irumudi, Viswanath & Sons have disproved that belief. In these films, there is no over-the-top violence like in KGF or Dhurandhar, or extraordinary kissing and romance like in Saiyaara or any other Bollywood film, but the movies still worked. So what should we say?

Experts say that this is a wave. None could exactly tell what is happening behind people flocking to theatres. There is no way that they might have gotten bored with OTT content, because almost all the new web series on Amazon, Netflix, Hotstar and SonyLIV are getting amazing viewership. However, with almost all the OTTs turning on ads, charging more for ad-free content, and Netflix monthly subscription still being seen as a burden, it looks like many people are turning towards the theatrical experience. But that could have happened in the past too, but it didn’t.

At the same time, last year, we saw a lot of violent films clicking at the box office. This year, many soft family films are working out. So this would be just a wave, and it works for a short time. Then again, something new might come out. However, filmmakers should learn the fact that films should always be engaging, no matter what the genre is. The success of the above said Telugu movies is a result of that engaging content only.

Change will be constant, and it will not be permanent. What worked today might not work tomorrow, and what didn’t work today might work tomorrow.
