For a long time now, there have been complaints about the high prices of popcorn and other food items at PVR. Several producers and distributors have also addressed the same. But when asked to comment on this, the MD of PVR has a completely different perspective.
PVR INOX Managing Director Ajay Bijli has pushed back against the widespread belief that multiplex cinema viewing is excessively expensive, stating that ticket prices at PVR are far more reasonable than commonly perceived.
According to Bijli, the company’s average ticket price currently stands at Rs 259, which he believes is accessible for a large section of moviegoing audiences across India.
He also addressed criticism surrounding food and beverage pricing at multiplexes, particularly popcorn, which has often been highlighted on social media as a symbol of inflated costs. Bijli clarified that popcorn at PVR cinemas starts at Rs 159, emphasizing that customers have multiple pricing options depending on portion size and location.
He pointed out that multiplexes operate in premium real estate spaces and incur significantly higher operational expenses, including rent, power, staffing and maintenance, which naturally influence pricing structures.
Bijli further explained that ticket prices vary based on city, cinema format and show timing, with weekday and morning shows often available at lower rates. He stressed that cinemas remain committed to offering value while maintaining quality viewing experiences, advanced projection systems and enhanced comfort.
At a time when theatrical footfalls are gradually recovering, Bijli’s remarks aim to correct misconceptions and reinforce the idea that cinema viewing remains an affordable and enjoyable form of entertainment for Indian audiences.
