Maverick filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, once known for cult hits like Shiva and Satya, has now become more of a headline-maker for his controversial films and outspoken social media posts than his cinematic brilliance. From introducing bold newcomers to picking politically sensitive subjects, RGV continues to stir debates. But this time, it wasn’t a film trailer or a tweet that got him trending  it was a legal battle.

The Andhra Pradesh CID recently served notices to Ram Gopal Varma in connection with multiple complaints filed over his political satire Kamma Rajyamlo Kadapa Redlu. The complaints, reportedly from Ongole, Anakapalle, and Mangalagiri, accused the film of provoking hatred and targeting certain political figures. Varma challenged the CID’s notices in the Andhra Pradesh High Court, requesting protection from coercive action.

In a major relief to the director, the High Court on Thursday directed the CID not to take any hasty or punitive action against Varma during the ongoing investigation. The court acknowledged the filmmaker’s plea and postponed further hearing on the matter. For now, Varma can breathe easy, as the cloud of immediate legal trouble has been lifted  temporarily at least.

This isn’t the first time RGV has faced legal fire for his statements or films. His previous social media posts had also drawn cases involving prominent politicians like Chandrababu Naidu, Pawan Kalyan, and Nara Lokesh. Yet, Varma remains defiant, claiming that his art and opinions shouldn’t be criminalized. With the court giving him interim relief, all eyes are now on how the next chapter of this legal drama unfolds.
