After being hospitalized due to a stabbing incident, Saif Ali Khan's rapid approval of a cashless medical claim worth Rs 25 lakh by Niva Bupa has ignited a debate. The Association of Medical Consultants (AMC), which includes more than 14,000 healthcare professionals, has raised concerns with the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) over what they perceive as biased treatment towards celebrities. They argued that while famous individuals seem to enjoy quick and favorable insurance services, regular policyholders are often left grappling with inadequate coverage and low compensation rates.

The AMC has called on the IRDAI to conduct an investigation into these practices and to set up clear guidelines to ensure fairness in insurance claim processing. Highlighting the case of Mr. Khan, who was assaulted and sustained multiple injuries including a close call with a spinal cord injury, the AMC pointed out the discrepancy in claim processing times and conditions for celebrities versus the general public. Mr. Khan, having been discharged from the hospital and prescribed bed rest, became a prominent example of the perceived inequities in the insurance sector.

The organization is advocating for a more transparent and equitable system where insurance benefits are distributed fairly, regardless of an individual's social standing. The AMC stressed the importance of insurance as a tool for protection for all, not just a privileged few, calling for an end to discriminatory practices that favour high-profile individuals over the average policyholder. They believe that everyone should be entitled to the same level of care and financial support in times of medical emergencies, emphasizing the need for uniformity in the assessment and approval of insurance claims.
