The theme of young girls falling for older men is regularly seen in Hollywood movies, as life in the West is close to that. However, in India, most of the time, the age difference between a man and a woman is at the maximum of only 10 years, but not more than that. That’s why such young-old romances never draw crowds, unless they are dealt with comedy.
In Bollywood, we have seen the film De De Pyaar De, where a 50-year-old man falls in love with a 20-year-old girl, played by Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh. While Part 1 was successful, the sequel to the film failed to resonate with audiences. Now, Suriya’s next film, Viswanath & Sons, is also coming up with a similar theme. In Bollywood, there are many films that cater to this theme, but none of them worked. However, these themes used to work in Black & White Telugu films big time, but not now, as Gen Z is completely not into this mature romance stuff.
However, filmmakers are keen to try it, as it also reflects how our 40-50-year heroes are teaming with heroines aged early 20s. As director Venky Atluri confidently picked up this point and impressed the likes of Suriya, we have to see how they will work for the Telugu audience. Only if dealt with the right emotion, it may click well, otherwise the whole project falls at risk.
