Like a boat struggling against the tide, Telugu heroes often find it challenging to make waves in the Tamil film industry. Jr NTR's latest film Devara is no exception. Despite its sensational box office run in Telugu and a decent showing in Hindi, the film has underwhelmed in Tamil Nadu. Audiences there seem to maintain a long-standing disinterest in films led by non-Tamil stars, a trend Devara could not break.

In a recent interview, Tamil industry analysts highlighted the film’s pre-release business of just Rs. 8 crore, with promotional efforts totaling Rs. 1 crore. Unfortunately, the film managed to collect only Rs. 1 crore in the region, leading to significant losses. Even overseas, Devara earned a mere $15,000 from its Tamil version, further underscoring the tepid response.

Despite Jr NTR’s dedication—dubbing his role in five languages, including Tamil—the film failed to capture the attention of Tamil moviegoers. This echoes a broader pattern where Telugu heroes struggle to find a foothold in Tamil Nadu, despite their strong presence in other regions.

Given this consistent trend, industry experts suggest that filmmakers should shift their focus to Telugu and Hindi markets, where the reception is stronger, rather than investing heavily in all South Indian languages. This strategic approach might yield better returns and avoid unnecessary losses in less receptive markets like Tamil Nadu.
