Telugu film industry, known as Tollywood, is on one side celebrating the Sankranti success of some big ticket films and Tier 2 heroes, but then, there is this long dry phase that’s not even allowing films to run at the theatres confidently and profitably on the other side. Adding to that, a lot more issues are plaguing, and if we look at what’s troubling in 2026, these are the biggest headlines.

1) Big-budget films are not working due to the routine commerciality factor, no matter how hard they are pushed. While one or two films might work, other big-budgeted experiments with commercial content are flopping big time. Take many films that have been released so far in 2026 from Tier 2 heroes, and those films have slept in the grave without even posting minimum recovery, forget about profits.

2) The rule of OTT window affects small-production houses, because if there is an 8-week window, OTTs are not paying well in advance. Only if they could bring the film to OTTs in just 2 weeks after release, the payment will be high. And if producers are not taking these payments, they are not even collecting at least the 1/4th of that payment from theatres.

3) Theatre owners are demanding a percentage system, while producers want rentals and per-week fixed hires only. Many big producers said no to the demanded percentage system, where distributors are asking for 60% share in the first week. With film only running for 1-2 weeks, many are wondering who would give away a huge percentage of it. But then, this will favour multiplexes, and they are likely to obtain more control over the placements of films rather than distributors or exhibitors. Well, slowly, this is becoming a disturbed ecosystem.

4) More and more appalling films are being churned out in the name of concepts, including brutal killings and impossible ideas, and futuristic thoughts that are laced with an ancient mindset.

These are the main issues so far, and there are many more if we dig deeper.
