Tollywood is one of the biggest film industries in India without any doubt. Huge budgets, record pre-release business, sky-high remunerations, and everything looks grand. But when it comes to box office returns, the picture isn’t equally impressive. Only a very few of the movies are actually giving a breakeven to the producers. Out of every 10 films, at least 6–7 are struggling to recover costs. Many projects are entering theatres already in deficit, but then, the spending isn’t slowing down. Here’s another classic case.

Producers are still going all-in in terms of investment, backing stars beyond their current market and funding directors’ ambitious visions without compromise. Sample this: Gopichand’s Bharata Varsha. A glimpse of the film that was released yesterday, is enough to understand the scale being attempted. Mounted as a period film set in almost 600-700 AD, the film promises large-scale war sequences, heavy VFX, and massive set pieces. There’s no strategic move in this, but only a full-blown high-risk attempt.

In the recent times, Gopichand hasn’t had a solid commercial hit since Loukyam. Films like Jil, Gautam Nanda, and Seetimaarr had their moments but didn’t deliver the kind of success required to rebuild his box office pull. His recent outings haven’t changed that narrative either. Yet, producer Sreenivasa Chitturi is backing him with what appears to be his career’s biggest film. That’s why they say Telugu producers are huge risk takers.

Even the director Sankalp Reddy has earlier made a superhit like Ghazi, but then, his Antariksham 9000 Kmph failed big times, though it made hungama on the OTT circuit. If Bharat Varsha clicks, it could turn into a surprise game-changer for Gopichand and the director. Else, Tollywood needs to recheck their plans.
