For many years, star heroes in Telugu cinema have been known for taking very high remuneration. Even when some of their recent films did not perform well, their fees often remained very high. This became a common discussion in the industry because producers had to spend huge amounts before a film even reached the theatres.

There was also a time when the success or failure of a movie did not seem to affect a star hero’s remuneration much. If a film failed, the producer had to face the financial pressure. The hero however could move on to the next project with another big remuneration.

But the situation seems to be changing slowly.

Today, audiences are showing more interest in the story, director and overall content of a movie. A film cannot always depend only on the image of its hero. Even a big star needs strong content to bring audiences to theatres.

This change is also affecting the way some heroes are doing business with producers. Instead of asking for a huge fixed remuneration, some stars are reportedly choosing profit sharing deals. Under such agreements, the hero may take a lower upfront payment and receive a share from the profits if the movie performs well.

This model can help both sides. Producers may have less pressure before the release, while the hero also becomes financially connected to the success of the film.

A recent example discussed in the industry is Ravi Teja’s Irumudi. There has been talk that the actor’s remuneration was linked to the profits of the movie rather than being completely based on a fixed fee. Such arrangements show how the traditional remuneration system could be changing.

An industry personality also recently spoke about how the situation is different now compared with the past. According to the comments, actors are becoming more involved in different aspects of filmmaking and business decisions.

The change does not mean star heroes have stopped demanding high fees. Many leading actors still command huge remuneration because of their market value. However, profit-sharing and performance-based deals are becoming an interesting alternative.

The biggest reason could be the changing audience mindset. Viewers are no longer going to theatres only because a particular hero is present. They also want a good story, fresh presentation and strong entertainment.

Because of this, the importance of the film itself appears to be increasing.

If this trend continues, Telugu cinema could see more flexible business models between stars and producers. For heroes it could mean sharing the financial risk. For producers it could provide some relief from huge upfront costs.

In that sense, it looks like Telugu star heroes are slowly becoming more practical about the changing film business.
