Another small budgeted Malayalam film, woven around youths, especially those of +2 students and the life next, is doing unthinkable at the box office. The film is “Vaazha II: Biopic of a Billion Bros”, which turned into a surprise box office winner.
Released on April 2, the film is already past the ₹100 crore mark. And this is not a star-driven film. It revolves around +2 students, their friendships, confusion about the future, and that transition phase after school. Simple setup. But clearly, it has connected big time with youth. Reports are coming that some Telugu producers are now trying to bring this movie into Telugu, as the original version is going unstoppable at the Box Office. Previously, the delay in the release of such superhit films like Alappuzha Gymkhana ended up in losses for the Telugu version, so literally, they are hurrying.
This trend is not new. Recently, Premalu did very well in Telugu too. Without big stars, without heavy promotions, it still connected because of its relatability. So naturally, distributors are convinced that Vaazha II will repeat the same success in Telugu. Of course, youth-centric content is clearly working, but only when the content is engaging. In recent times, films like Couple Friendly got appreciated but haven’t made good money, while Tamil dubbed movies like Youth and With Love, whose originals are superhits, have failed to click in Telugu.
Only if the comedy and the portrayals feel real and not forced, these films work; not every Malayalam hit translates the same way at the Telugu box office.
