A big news is making waves about Varanasi, the much-awaited pan-Indian film directed by SS Rajamouli and starring Mahesh Babu. According to strong industry buzz, Rajamouli has reportedly taken the overseas theatrical rights of the film as part of his remuneration. These rights are said to be valued at nearly ₹160 crore by making it one of the biggest deals ever in Indian cinema.

Instead of taking a fixed payment, the director is believed to have opted for a profit-sharing model which could bring him massive returns after the film’s release. Trade experts feel that overseas markets will play a huge role in Varanasi’s overall box office performance.

Meanwhile Mahesh Babu is also said to be a stakeholder in the project. Reports suggest that this decision could turn into a major financial gain for the superstar. If the film performs as expected, Mahesh Babu’s earnings from Varanasi may reach ₹200 crore which would be a career-defining milestone for him.

Apart from business talks, Varanasi has been making headlines for its scale and preparation. Mahesh Babu is playing the role of Lord Ram and he recently revealed that he went through intense physical training for the part. Under Rajamouli’s guidance, Mahesh worked on posture, walking style and body movement. He trained in Kalari which is a traditional martial art from Kerala, for several months. He also spent nearly six months training with a track and field team to change his running style, even though it appears only briefly in the film.

The movie also stars Priyanka Chopra as Mandakini in a powerful action role, while Prithviraj Sukumaran plays the main antagonist. Varanasi is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on April 7, 2027.
