Vivek Agnihotri recently spoke about Deepika Padukone’s 2020 visit to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), saying she likely didn’t know much about the political situation and simply did what her PR team suggested. He claimed her team might have seen it as a way to promote her film.
“She probably didn’t understand what was really going on there. The PR team must’ve told her it was a good time to show up because the university was in the news,” Agnihotri said. “Movies and politics often overlap. But actors getting involved in real politics is risky. If she knew it could hurt her career, I doubt she would’ve gone.”
Deepika had visited JNU during the anti-CAA protests, just before her film Chhapaak released. She stood in silence with protesting students, which triggered strong reactions across the country. While some saw it as courage, others saw it as a calculated move.
Agnihotri’s comments add fuel to the debate about celebrity involvement in politics. Whether it was a genuine moment or a promotional tactic, Deepika’s JNU visit still gets talked about not for what she said, but for where she stood.
