As per the statistics of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), At least 15 suicides were recorded every hour in India last year. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal tops the chart with 16,307, 16,122 and 14,310 suicide cases.
Among Cities with over 10 lakh population, Its Chennai which is leading with 2,214 suicide cases. Bengaluru (1,906), Delhi (1,847), Mumbai (1,196) and Bhopal (1,064) occupy the rest of the Top 5 spots.
Major Reasons behind suicides in the country are Family Issues (21.7 percent) and Health Problems (18 percent). One among every six suicide cases was that of a Housewife (15.3 percent). The rest include Daily Wagers (12 percent), Employees (7.4 percent), Students (6.1 percent) and Senior Citizens (0.7 percent). Around 41.8 percent of people ended their lives by hanging, 26 percent by consuming poison, 6.9 percent by self-immolation, 5.6 percent by drowning and 1.1 percent by jumping off from high-rise buildings.
