In what could be seen as a shock to Telangana CM KCR, as many as 16 sarpanches from his native mandal of Markuk under Siddipet assembly constituency, have threatened to resign from their posts if the pending bills of the panchayat are not paid at the earliest. This incident happened on September 21, but came to light recently.

The T government has not been releasing the pending amounts to the panchayats citing fund shortage. As a result, the sarpanches are forced to borrow and pay salaries to panchayat sanitary staff, spend on plantation, garbage cleaning and other such works. With the officials not clearing the bills, they are forced to pay through their nose As a result this has become a headache for them .

At the same time, the government has given joint check power to the deputy sarpanches. This too is leading to many problems. Hence the sarpanches, who met in a farm land in the mandal, said that they would resign if their pending bills were not cleared immediately . Mass resignations are the only alternative, a sarpanch said on the occasion.

Many sarpanches across the state face the same problem. The officials control everything and the elected sarpanches are made the scapegoats. The state government reportedly has not been releasing funds to the local bodies. As a result, severe fund crunch affecting most panchayats
