2021 Is Not The Only Republic Day Celebrations In India without Chief Guest
The Indian government has invited British Prime Minister Borris Johnson as the chief guest for the Republic Day parade. The PM has happily agreed to be a part of the annual parade.
However, Boris Johnson had to cancel his plan at the last minute with the Coronavirus situation in the United Kingdom. He took the decision to tackle the spread of the new strain of Covid-19 dubbed as UK strain.
With this, the 72nd Republic Day Parade will be carried out without a chief guest. However, this is not the first time, the iconic parade was held in the country with a chief guest.
Earlier, the Republic Day Parade was conducted in India without the chief guests in three instances. The Celebrations in 1952, 1953, and 1966 were held with a chief guest gracing the event.
Looking at the Republic Day Celebrations in 1966. A lot of incidents and developments in India resulted in the country celebrating the annual Parade with a chief guest.
In 1966, the then Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri was on a tour to Russia's Tashkent to hold talks on the India-Pakistan war. After signing the peace agreement, he breathed his last on January 11.
After his sudden demise, Gulzarilal Nanda was appointed as the Acting Prime Minister of India. He served the nation as the Prime Minister for a brief period of time from January 11-January 24.
Later, Indira Gandhi was made the Indian Prime Minister. She took the oath as the PM on the 24th of January, as the first Prime Minister of India.
With only two days for the Republic Day Celebrations, India went for the Parade without inviting a chief guest. With lack of time, no elaborate arrangements were made.
Looking at the other two instances, India didn't invite any chief guests in 1952 and 1953. Now 2021 became the fourth instance where the Republic Day Parade was held without a chief guest.
