2463 Politicians Cannot Contest Elections This Time

Update: 2019-12-29 17:25 GMT
It would be a great disappointment for over 2463 political leaders at the local level this time in Telangana. They cannot contest in the upcoming local body polls this time. The reason? They have delayed submission of the records of their expenditure in the last election.

Yes. As many as 2463 candidates, who have failed to submit the details of their election expenditure during the last elections, have been disqualified to contest in the elections this time. Most of these have contested as ward members and corporators. Interestingly, a large number of them are said to be from the Opposition. Such numbers are more in Ramagundam Municipality, where the opposition is quite strong. As many as 363 persons from Ramagundam have been disqualified this way. Many are wondering if this is a strategy to ensure that the TRS will have a facile win as key Opposition leaders are out of the race.

The candidates are supposed to file their election expenditure reports within 45 days of the declaration of the results. There are strong rumours that the TRS is using this provision to get the candidates disqualified by the Election Commission. The candidates could be disqualified from contesting even if their expenditure exceeds the permissible limits.
