One of the biggest scams that rocked the entire nation is 2G scam, and the court verdict is out today in the case. In the verdict, the Patiala House Court has acquitted former Telecom Minister A Raja, DMK Kanimozhi and others. DMK leaders and party cadre delighted with the verdict and they started celebrations near the Patiala House. But CBI- ED are getting ready to appeal in the high court challenging the Patiala House verdict.
It is known that the 2G scam broke out during the UPA regime. CAG submitted its report to the Central Government saying that the government lost Rs.1.76 lakh crores due to the illegal distribution of the 2G spectrum during UPA rule. CBI filed two cases on the scam. On the other hand, ED also started its investigation by filing a case.
DMK chief Karunanidhi's daughter, Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi, DMK minister A Raja were the prime accused in the case. Former secretary to the Telecommunications Sidharth Behra, Raja's private secretary RK Santalia.. and a total of 14 persons were named in the charge-sheet.
There are several twists in the 2G case which broke out ten years ago. UPA achieved power for two consecutive terms 2004 and 2009. DMK was the alliance partner to Congress party in the UPA. Karunanidhi bargained for strong minister berths and they got Telecommunications ministry for A Raja. The scam broke out when CAG submitted their report.
When CBI filed cases regarding the 2G scam, they have included the case of Swan Telecom bribing Rs.200 crores to Kalaignar-TP Group for the allotment of 2G spectrum. The trial of these cases was carried out by Chief Justice OP Saini ofCBI Special Court in Delhi. Reliance Telecom - Swan Telecom -Unitech Wireless companies attended the trial. CBI tried to question Karunanidhi wife Dayalu Ammal who was Kalaignar TV director. Bur Karuna family evaded her question by saying that she lost her memory. Upset with the developments DMK came out of the UPA government at that time.
The trial went on for six years and it concluded on April 26. The court announced that the verdict will be given on November 7. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Karunanidhi on November 5, just a two days before the verdict during his Chennai visit. Allegations were raised by other parties that regarding their meeting. The court has postponed the verdict saying that it has to study the case further. The verdict is out today and they gave a clean chit to Raja and Kanimozhi.
