66 Lakhs Foreign currency seized at airport

A person was caught on Friday while attempting to smuggle foreign currency worth Rs 66 lakh from the Chennai airport to Singapore. Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials has seized Rs 66 lakh foreign currency from a Singapore bound passenger.

DRI officials, acting on specific intelligence inputs stopped a passenger who was about to board a flight to Singapore. The passenger was carrying  foreign currency equivalent of Rs 66 lakh in his checked-in baggage.

He did not have the statutory documentation to prove that the currency being taken out of the country was for bonafide purposes. Police found that passenger had no documents and was carrying the currencies illegally. The currency was recovered and the passenger was detained. This is the second such incident in a span of week days.

Customs officials, in recent days, have begun tightening security after reports of currency being smuggled from the Chennai airport.
