The time machine has rung out 2022 and rings in 2023. The year ahead is likely to be a politically stormy one with not one, not two but as many as nine states in the country going to elections. These elections are going to be the semi-final for the all important political battle of 2024 general election, which will decide the fate of the country for the next five years.
Four north eastern states - Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram and Meghalaya - are going to polls in the first part of the year. Though small, the elections to these states are important for the BJP's grand narrative. Besides, the two south Indian states of Karnataka and Telangana will have elections. The BJP and the Congress have high stakes in both the states. In Telangana, the ruling BRS has pitted itself in a do-or-die battle.
Besides, there would be elections to Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. In two of these states, the Congress is in power and the MP is in the hands of the BJP. Thus, these elections are important for both these parties. The results of these nine states are going to determine the future political contours of the country as it cruises into 2024 when Narendra Modi will make another bid to become the prime minister of the country.
Most important of all is the election to the state assembly of Telangana, where the BJP is making an all out effort to come to power. If it succeeds in coming to power, then it will become the only second state in south India to vote for the BJP. As of now, only Karnataka has voted the BJP to power. The TRS is straining its every nerve to prevent the BJP from coming to power. Thus, 2023 is going to be of critical salience in national politics.
