Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal took everyone by surprise by raising a new demand by asking why we should not have pictures of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi on the new Indian currency notes. He even cited the example of Indonesia having a picture of Lord Ganesha on the currency.
The political circles were surprised by the demand made by the Chief Minister. The BJP supporters alleged that Kejriwal started the demand to use the Hindutva card before Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh where the Hindu voters are in big numbers.
The timing of the demand was such that Arvind Kejriwal urged the Union government to print the pictures of Hindu deities a day after the famous Diwali festival. After banning firecrackers bursting Chief Minister raised the new demand.
Now another demand came from the grand old Congress party. Reacting to this, Congress MP Manish Tewari raised a new demand on why not have the pictures of BR Ambedkar on currency notes. The opposition party is batting for the new demand to have Ambedkar's pictures on currency notes.
Saying that Mahatma Gandhi already has pictures of him on the currency notes, the opposition party is demanding Ambedkar's pictures. A few Congress party leaders are supporting the demand and asking the government for this.
Media reports say that Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment of India, Ramdas Athawale also said that Ambedkar's picture should be there on the currency notes.
