Both the winning and losing MLA candidates in Telangana are extremely busy these days. They are meeting their key associates and are neck-deep into paper work? It's not for MInister's post nor for some nominated posts. They are not even bothering about the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. So, what is bothering them? It is the expenditure they have made during the just concluded elections.
With January 15 being the last date for filing the expenditure records to the Election commissioner, all the MLA candidates - both the winners as well as the losers - are furiously working to complete their accounts. As many as 1821 candidates have fought the election for the 119 seats and they have to show that they did not cross the EC-imposed limit of Rs 28 lakh.
If someone fails to furnish the report, he or she would be debarred from contesting the elections for at least three years. In the 2014 elections, as many as 47 candidates have failed to furnish their expenditure details and have been debarred from contesting elections. The law mandates that the details have to be submitted within 30 days after the elections.
