Update: 2021-09-18 12:37 GMT
The political crisis in the Punjab Congress caused by the confrontation between Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and the legislators had resulted in the Chief Minister resigning from his post. The resignation came ahead of the CLP meeting. Captain Amarinder Singh met Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit at the Raj Bhavan and submitted his resignation.

It is said that the Chief Minister had resigned from his post after Congress national chief Sonia Gandhi reportedly asked him to step down from his post. The suggestion is said to have come from Sonia Gandhi earlier today.

His resignation has now paved the way for the election of a new leader who will lead the state as the Chief Minister. The new candidate will have a big task ahead as Punjab is all set to face the general elections in 2022.

As the Congress Legislature Party meeting will start at 5 PM today in Chandigarh. The leaders might take a call on picking their new leader in the meeting. We have to wait for the official announcement from Congress on the crucial meeting.

AICC general secretary Harish Rawat had tweeted on Friday saying that the crucial meeting was called going by the proposal made by the Congress leaders. The Congress Legislature Party meeting will be held in the National Congress party office in Chandigarh, he said in the tweet.
