Amid surge in Covid-19 infections, Italy announces Easter lockdown

The European country Italy is facing the wrath of the second wave of the Coronavirus pandemic. The fresh infections and casualties related to respiratory disease have been increasing rapidly.

Italy registered over 300 fatalities for two consecutive days. The European country added 380 and 317 casualties on Friday and Saturday respectively. So far, over 1,00,000 people have lost their lives to the pandemic.

With no option left, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi's cabinet passed a decree to impose lockdown in the nation. The fresh lockdown will be imposed in half of Italy's regions that have a high population.

The new restriction will be effective from March 15, Monday, and will be effective through April 6. The public cannot step out of their house except for work or health reasons. All non-essential shops will be shut.

As the new variants of the pandemic that are more contagious spreading rapidly, Prime Minister Mario Draghi warned of a new wave of the ongoing pandemic and urged the people to stay home and stay safe.

The authorities have marked the regions in the nation as red and orange zones based on the contagion. The lockdown measures will be imposed in the Red region more strictly. The other regions will also be asked to follow the restrictions.

Italy which has been facing criticism for a slow pace of vaccination drive announced that the vaccination efforts will be increased and it is aiming to vaccinate not less than 80 percent of the population by September end.
