Andhra Pradesh: High Court Issues Key Directives On Cockfights During Sankranti
Sankranthi is one of the famous and widely celebrated festivals in Andhra Pradesh. The festival is celebrated for three days is known for conducting rooster fightings during the festival season.
Hundreds of crores will be involved in gambling activities in connection with the cockfights during the three days of the festival season every year.
This year, the cockfights and gambling activities are not going to be normal as the Andhra Pradesh High Court in its orders directed the concerned authorities to take the required measures to stop the cockfight activities.
The bench led by recently transferred Chief Justice of AP High Court Justice Joymalya Bagchi said the directives issued earlier by the High Court should be followed and directed the officials to implement the orders.
The issue reached the High Court after petitioner Sheik Saleem moved the Court by filing a Public Interest Litigation alleging that the authorities are not taking the required measures to counter the roster fightings and gambling activities.
Hearing the petition, the bench mentioned the directives issued by the High Court back in 2016 directing the Collectors and SPs to see that the roster fightings will not take place.
The constitutional bench reportedly said that the authorities failed to implement the directives issued by the High Court and adjourned the next hearing of the petition.
