In another move aimed at regularising the delivery of welfare benefits, the Andhra Pradesh Government is all set to bring in the "facial authentification" method instead of the current system of biometrics. Thus, the beneficiaries would be identified by the facial recognition system in place of the thumb impression.
This would not only enable the government to weed out the fake beneficiaries but also ensure easy identification of the beneficiary. The thumb impressions have become problematic as several senior citizens have problems with the finger prints. Even in case of the iris identification, there are problems when the beneficiaries undergo cataract surgeries.
Sources say that at least 2 lakh beneficiaries are facing such problems due to the erasure of finger prints due to old age. These people are being given their pension on the basis of matching their photos with the photo in their aadhar card. This given an opportunity for manipulation and misappropriation. To ensure that there is no misappropriation, the government wants to use facial recognition technic.
Under the new system, the face of the beneficiary is scanned using a app. This will enable matching their face with the details provided in the Aadhr Card. This will help in easy identification of the beneficiary, say sources. If and when this system is put in place, AP would be the first state to implement facial recognition.
