While there has been a groundswell of public support for the 'encounter' that took place in the spot where veterinarian Disha was brutally raped and done to death, the national parties appear to be divided on the issue. The four rapists were shot dead during the reconstruction of the crime scene at Shadnagar on Friday.
The ruling BJP appears to have been divided on the issue. While minister Smriti Irani and others lauded the shooting down of the alleged rapists right inside the parliament, another senior member of the party and former minister Menaka Gandhi said killing the rapists without a trial was wrong. Even party MP from West Bengal, Locket Chatterjee, was critical of the manner in which the 'rapists' were killed. She said they should have been handed the strictest possible punishment after due process of law had taken its course. Such encounters would set a bad precedent, she argued.
Even in the Congress, Shashi Tharoor has strongly criticised the way the encounter was done. He too said that the Telangana government should have waited till the legal process was over and the accused were proven guilty. However, several other party leaders had welcomed the encounter.
