bjp, Congress to put spokes Mekapati's plans for Atmakur bypoll

Update: 2022-05-28 07:07 GMT
The BJP and the Congress appear to be putting spokes in the way of the Mekapati family to have a unanimous election from Atmakur assembly constituency. The Atmakur seat fell vacant due to the sudden demise of Mekapati Gautham Reddy. The YSRCP and the Mekapati family want to ensure that the election was a unanimous affair. However, both the Congress and the BJP are getting ready to contest and ensure that there is polling.

Though the Congress has not made its stand clear yet, the BJP has unequivocally said that it will put up a candidate against the Mekapatis. The BJP said the number of votes it gets is not the question. The point is that there should be no place for dynasty politics. The idea that a family member of the deceased MLA should be made the candidate in the bypolls is a dynastic one, according to the BJP.

The Mekapati family, which has been winning from Atmakuru for quite some time, feels the bypoll should be unanimous. It has decided to make Gautham Reddy’s brother Vikram Reddy the candidate. Reddy has already toured the constituency once and is hoping for a facile win even if there was to be a polling.

The BJP adopted the same stand in the Badvel by-election too. It had put up a candidate. The party won around 20000 votes and lost its security deposit. This time too, the story in Atmakur may not be any different, say sources. The party has no presence in the constituency but wants to contest the elections to prove a point.
