The ruling BJP has reasons to smile as it has won a majority of the Rajya Sabha seats without a contest. The party has won 14 of the 44 seats, where the candidates were elected unanimously. This works out to 30 per cent of the announced seats. The BJP has emerged stronger in the Rajya Sabha after the polls.
A total of 57 seats are up for grabs. Of them, as many as 44 candidates were elected unopposed. Thus, polling would be held only for 13 seats. Of the unanimously elected seats, 11 are from UP, six from Tamil Nadu, five from Bihar, four from AP, three each from Madhya Pradesh and Odisha, two each from Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Punjab and Jharkhand and one from Uttarakhand.
Among the 13 seats, where the polling would be held, six are from Maharshtra, four each from Rajasthan and Karnataka and two from Haryana. The BJP is likely to win more seats from among these. Sources say that the âBJP would be in a comfortable position on the issue of the presidential elections.
Among the notable winners are Kapil Sibal and former finance minister P Chidambaram. Sibal has entered the fray as an independent candidate, supported by the Samajwadi party. P Chidambaramhas won from Tamil Nadu quota.
