We have reached a point where selecting the kind of meat we eat also became controversial. Halal vs Jhatka meat is not a new controversy, especially where the Bharatiya Janata Party is in power. The controversy erupted in Karnataka a few months back after a few Hindu groups started a demand for a Halal ban.
The Muslim groups objected to this as they asked why the issue was raised all of a sudden. Amid this, there are reports which say that the Karnataka government might table a bill that is against the Halal way of cutting meat in the Assembly.
As per the media reports the issue is in the news after BJP MLC N Ravikumar reportedly hinted that there is a need to bring legislation so that only food certification other than the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India(FSSAI) should be banned.
If the bill is tabled in the house making the media reports true, then we can expect an intense war of words between the ruling BJP and Congress. The grand old Congress is always pro-minorities as they are the big vote bank for the party. It will not let the issue go without a big protest.
On the other hand, the BJP has good strength in the Assembly house and it can easily pass the bill without any issues. Though the bill can be passed there would be a big fight in the house and we can expect the same.
The right-wing supporters are saying that they will not take the meat cut in Halal style and have started Jhatka shops already. However, the shops were targeted by Muslims in various incidents. States like Kerala saw such incidents.
