BJP scores a century in Rajya Sabha, clean bowles Congress

Update: 2022-04-02 04:31 GMT
The BJPs unstoppable Juggernaut has notched up another feat. The BJP became the first political party after 35 years to get more than 100 seats in Rajya Sabha. While it already has more than 300 seats in the Lok Sabha, it is now inching its way to reach the half-way mark in the 245-member Rajya Sabha.

In the elections to the 13 vacancies in Rajya Sabha, the BJP won four and with this its tally has jumped up from 97 to 101. Its strength is likely to increase further by the end of this year. By mid-2023, the BJP would cross the half-way mark in Rajya Sabha.

The Congress, on the other hand, is facing the threat of losing the recognition as the Leader of Opposition status. To retain the LOP status, the Congress should have at least 24 seats. It now has 27 seats and by the end of this year, its number is likely to fall below 24. The BJP won two seats from Assam, one each from Tripura and Nagaland. The AAP has won five seats, all from Punjab, taking its strength to eight seats.

The Congress had a complete majority in the Rajya Sabha till 1988.  Till 1988, the party had a majority in both the houses of Parliament. Now by crossing the 100 mark, the BJP and its allies are  just 3 seats short of the magic number in the Rajya Sabha. Now, getting the bills passed in Rajya Sabha is a lot easier for the BJP. It can now get its nominees elected as the president and the vice-president of the country in a facile manner.
