Break For Cock fights In Andhra

Its customary in Andhra Pradesh to organize cock fights during Sankranthi season.Despite the ban, cockfights were organised openly in villages in some districts, mainly in the coastal Andhra region.

Today high court orders to maintain status quo on the traditional cockfighting conducted during the Sankranti festival. The court announced that permission was not given to any one for the cock fights and asked government to take appopriate action.

Narahari Jagadish Kumar of West Godavari who sought a ban on cockfighting filed a petition court saying that arrangements were underway to conduct fight despite the ban imposed on cruel fights.

Responding to the arguments, counsel representing the AP government submitted that the police authorities are taking all possible steps to stop cockfights in the district.The bench told the police authorities to ensure preventive steps for the same.

Cock fights are organised during Sankranti in Krishna, West Godavari and East Godavari districts. Crores of rupees are bet every year, and defying police ban, the cock fights are organised in the region for a week.Powerful politicians of all hues, celebrities and businessmen used to participate in the events.
