Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman held a press conference today and announced that Power distribution companies in Union Territories to be privatised to improve sub optimal performance of discoms.
The announcement was made as part of the fourth tranche of the stimulus package to battle the economic adversity due to the coronavirus pandemic.
"It will lead to better services to consumers and improvement in operational and financial efficiency in distribution," Sitharaman said.
Electricity discoms across the country are facing the financial burden and to save them, the central government has given Rs 90,000 crores reform linked bailout package to the fund starved discoms. Along with that, Smart Prepaid Meters will be introduced soon, said the FM Nirmala Sitharaman.
