The pressure kept building on the Union Government after Ruling & Opposition Parties in Andhra Pradesh protested in Parliament seeking Special Category Status. In the wake of upcoming Assembly elections in Gujarat, Punjab & Uttar Pradesh, BJP is aware of the fact that the protests highlighting the injustice being done to AP will damage their poll prospects.
Hence, BJP Leadership is seriously mulling to announce Special Package as early as possible to prevent the damage. BJP President Amit Shah has given clear instructions to Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on the Special Package. Following this development, Arun Jaitley invited Sujana Chowdary and CM Ramesh to his office for holding discussion on the package. Later, Amit Shah and Arun Jaitley went to Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu's to prepare guidelines for the Special Package.
If granted Special Status, State Government will have to bear only 10 percent of expenditure for Central Schemes. Whereas, Centre will have to bear 90 percent cost. In the span of 5 years, AP will benefit just Rs 1,400 crore.
If the buzz is to be believed, Centre has come up with a package of Rs 2,000 crore per year for the next five years. An announcement in this regard might be made in the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.
