Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday tabled the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the Rajya Sabha. Six hours have been allocated to debate the bill in the House. The bill has already cleared the Lok Sabha test where 311 MPs voted in favour of the legislation.
BJP allies AIADMK, JD(U) and Akali Dal have 11, six and three members respectively in the Upper House. Besides, regional parties like the BJD with seven MPs, and YSR Congress and the TDP with 2 each are backing the Bill. The BJP has 83 members in Rajya Sabha.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill has divided political parties. The Congress is leading a strong opposition to the Bill and has even hinted that it could approach the Supreme Court if the Bill is cleared in Parliament.
