Corona virus is having an unlikely effect. It has affected the poultry industry very badly and the industry is now on its knees. Ever since the outbreak of Corona virus, there were fears that chicken meat was one of the carriers of the virus. Since then, the chicken sales have plummeted. The price has come down. There is massive culling in several places.
As a result of the crisis in the poultry industry, the farmers cultivating maize are badly hit. At least 90 per cent of the maize produce is used as poultry feed. The crisis-ridden poultry farmers are not buying maize anymore. The maize used to be sold at Rs 2400 per bag. Now the rates have come down to Rs 1300. The farmers are thus losing up to Rs 900 per bag. Taking advantage of the situation, the traders have formed a cartel and are lowering the prices. This is further hitting them hard.
With there being no signs of the poultry industry looking up anytime soon, the maize farmers are a worried lot. They are now looking towards the State Government to bail them out.
