At the time when Eenadu had no opposition what-so-ever, Dasari Narayana Rao challenged Ramoji Rao by launching 'Udhayam'. In 1984, The Filmmaker brought the daily on behalf of Taraka Prabhu Publication. While Dasari used to be the chairman of 'Udhayam', Ramakrishna Prasad had acted as its MD.
A lot of Young Journalists from Telangana region worked for 'Udhayam' in those days. Today, Most of them have been in an influential positions. Even RTI Commissioner M Sridhar is a former Employee of this popular daily.
'Udhayam' is the first daily to introduce separate columns for Politics & Sports. Despite being the chairman, Dasari never interfered in the matters of Udhayam and he has given a free hand to the Journalists. The interview of People's War Central Committee Secretary Kondapalli Seetharamaiah published by Udhayam when Naxals Movement was at peaks created a sensation. People used to eagerly wait till 12 noon to receive Udhayam daily in many areas.
Later, Dasari introduced Sivaranjani for film-related updates and Udhayam Weekly as well. He, however, had to shut down 'Udhayam' due to financial issues. After the demise of Darsakaratna, A lot of people including Journalists began discussing about this daily and offered it a respectable position.
