Delta Variant Of Covid Transforms Further Into 'Delta Plus' Due To Mutation

Update: 2021-06-15 07:06 GMT
The B.1.617.2 strain of the novel Coronavirus that has a high transmission rate compared to the other variants was named as Delta variant by the global health body World Health Organization(WHO) earlier in May.

As a new development, the Delta variant has transformed further into 'Delta plus' or 'AY.1', due to a mutation, as per the scientists. However, the scientists raise a doubt that the new variant might show resistance towards the monoclonal antibody cocktail treatment.

Vinod Scaria, a scientist at Delhi's CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB) said, the new mutation was not found much in India, but the sequence was found in Europe, Asia, and America.

The scientist has attributed the spike protein of SARS-COV-2 for the Delta plus variant birth. Due to the spike, the virus enters the body and infects the cells. The virus frequency was not found in India in big numbers.

Bani Jolly, a specialist in genomic sequencing and a Ph.D student in a tweet said that the sequence of the Delta variant with a spike mutation can be found on GISAID. These sequences have been identified from 10 countries, he said.

Talking about the new variant, Immunologist Vineeta Bal opined that the severity of a disease cannot be understood by the variant showing resistance towards the therapy. The transmission rate of the new variant is a vital factor that decides its spread, she said.
