Doctors Keep Negative Patient, Release Positive Patient

Update: 2020-06-13 05:27 GMT
In a strange case of mix-up, a government hospital in Assam's Mangaldoi has discharged a positive patient instead of a recovered patient. Both had similar sounding names.

Instead of Hamid Ali, the hospital officials discharged Hanif Ali. When the list of the discharged persons was read out, Hamid Ali, who tested negative after treatment, was among the discharged. However, Hamid did not respond when his name was read out. Instead, Hanif raised his hand. Hanif, who was still testing positive, was discharged and sent home. It was only later that the gaffe was realised. Now the officials are making efforts to bring Hanif back and test all those who came in touch with him.

Sources in the hospital staff said that the confusion was due to the names sounding similar. What more, the names were inaudible in the PPEs. This could have resulted in the gaffe, they said. A magestirial inquiry has been ordered into the incident.
