Update: 2020-09-10 11:15 GMT
United States President Donald Trump has admitted downplaying the dangers of the coronavirus as he did not want to create panic or price spikes.

"I wanted to always play it down, I still like playing it down, because I don't want to create a panic," Trump said.

The US president said he had shown leadership by working to keep things calm and that his administration had done an incredible job with the coronavirus pandemic.

"I'm a cheerleader for this country, I love our country and I don't want people to be frightened. I don't want to create panic, as you say. And certainly, I'm not going to drive this country or the world into a frenzy," he said.

Meanwhile, the total number of coronavirus cases in the US surpassed 6 million. The virus is widespread in many areas, particularly in the Midwest, upper Great Plains, and South. Additionally, five states reported over 10,000 new infections last week.
