Drunk Driving: Be prepared to pay Rs 10,000!

The Road Transport Ministry is planning to introduce stringent punishments from drunken drivers by making the proposed Road Transport & Safety Bill a law. It already sent the copies of the proposed bill to all the State Governments to obtain their feedback.

Until now, First-Time Offenders were Fined up to Rs 2,000 or they receive Jail Term up to 6 months. The new law will increase the penalty by five-fold, that's up to Rs 10,000 and Imprisonment up to 1 Year. Repeat offence attracts more penalty besides imprisonment up to 1 year.  

The Bill also consists of penalties for driving uninsured vehicle and carrying more than one driving licence. If caught driving uninsured vehicle, The penalty will be between Rs 2,000 to Rs 1 lakh depending on the type of the vehicle. Even there is punishment for fault in design of the vehicles and the fine could be upto Rs 5 lakhs. If refused to recall such faulty vehicles, He/She can be jailed for three months.
