Mighty blow to Vijayakanth

Update: 2016-05-21 11:24 GMT
Election Commission cancelled the recognition of Vijayakanth's Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) as the State Party following its poor performance in the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Assembly polls.

In Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2016, Vijayakanth lost deposit contesting in Ulundurpettai Assembly Constituency. What's even worse is none of his party candidates were able to win any of the seats.

Post the EC's move, DMDK could no more use its party symbol 'Drum'. Now, Other Political Outfits might seek Drum symbol from EC.

Usually, EC accords State Party status to registered parties which could win 8 percent of the total votes polled in General Election. In 2006 Assembly polls, DMDK secured 8.38 percent of votes. The percentage has gone up to 10.08 in 2009 Lok Sabha elections. Even Vijayakanth was able to prove his existence in 2011 Assembly polls being an alliance partner with AIADMK. In 2016 Assembly Polls, DMDK won just 2.4 percent votes contesting in 104 seats. The alliance of DMK with People's Welfare Front (PWF) failed miserably and it eventually proved costly for DMK.
