Update: 2020-10-30 13:40 GMT
Ahead of the much anticipated Madhya Pradesh by-polls, the Congress party faced a brutal shock from the top election body Election Commission of India (EC) on Friday.

The Election Commission of India (EC) has issued orders to revoke the star campaigner status of Congress veteran and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath for violating multiple codes.

The EC found fault with the former Chief Minister for using 'item' remark for a woman candidate and said Kamal Nath is violating the model code of conduct.

On November 3, 2020, Kamal Nath, who has campaigned for Congress party candidate Suresh Raje at an election meeting addressed BJP's candidate Imarti Devi as 'item', which created a political storm.

The body has also slammed Kamal Nath for using words like “mafia” and milawatkhor” to address BJP leader and serving Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

With the Election Commission stripping the Star campaigner status of Kamal Nath, the candidate in whose constituency Kamal Nath will campaign from hereafter will bear the expenditure.
