The sporting world was shaken largely by the alleged sexual harassment row. The accused who is facing the allegations is not a normal person and holds the big position of President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), the governing body of the wrestling sport in India.
A few wrestlers led by celebrated wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik alleged that Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president is harassing them. They even sat for a protest in the national capital Delhi against this seeking strict action.
World Championship Medallist Vinesh Phogat spoke to the media at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Speaking on the issue the wrestler said that women wrestlers have been subjected to sexual harassment at the camps. She said that the coaches are harassing them and the WFI President also has a role in this.
"Women wrestlers have been sexually harassed at national camps by coaches and also the WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan. Some of the coaches appointed at national camps have been sexually harassing women wrestlers for years," she said speaking to the media.
Taking to Twitter Vinesh Phogat said that wrestlers give their best in getting prepared for the sport and it feels sad when the Federation won't support them. She said that she will not take a backstep and fight for their rights. She said this in a tweet made in Hindi. She tagged Prime Ministerâs Office, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Indian freestyle wrestler Sakshi Malik who gold medal at the prestigious 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games tournament also supported the protest and sat with the wrestlers. Along with Vinesh Phogat, she sat in protest. They said that they are demanding the sacking of the WFI President.
