Update: 2021-01-17 14:39 GMT
The farmers who have been protesting against the controversial agricultural bills introduced by the union government for nearly two months announced that the protests will not be called off on Republic Day.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the plea filed by the Center seeking directives to see that no tractor rally takes place on January 26, Republic Day celebrations.

The decision of the farmers’ union to not call off the proposed tractor rally on January 26, even before the Supreme Court gave its verdict gained significance.

As per the schedule, the three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde will hear the Centre’s plea on January 18 against the proposed Tractor rally.

The protestors are alleging that the government is targeting the farmers by sending National Investigation Agency notices and said, they will not appear before the NIA for investigation.

Referring to the notices issued by the NIA, Shiromani Akali Dal leader, and former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal termed the notices as an attempt to intimidate the farmers.
