Has TDP's strident opposition to Visakahapatnam as the administrative capital city cost it dear in the recent municipal elections? Despite its best efforts, the TDP came a cropper in Visakhapatnam. Thus TDP's streak of bad luck with Vizag continued unabated. Even the VSP agitation has failed to lift up the prospects of the TDP in Vizag.
It may be recalled that the TDP had won Vizag corporation only in 1987. This was during NTR's reign. After that, the Congress has literally dominated the corporation. The YSRCP took over from the Congress and defeated the TDP once again. This time around, the YSRCP had won 61 of the 96 seats in the GVMC. The party has managed to defeat the TDP in Vizag East, which has been going the TDP way for the past three assembly elections. The YSRCP had won 10 of the 13 wards in this segment. In the Vizag North, represented by Ganta Srinivasa Rao, the YSRCP had won 15 of the 17 wards. Ditto with Vizag west. The TDP could salvage some prestige only in Gajuwaka and Pendurthi. In Gajuwaka, the YSRCP lost 11 of the 26 seats. In Pendurthi too, the TDP performed a shade better.
Now the TDP leadership is worried that if it went ahead with its support to Amaravati, it may lose its base further in Vizag. It has also realised that the Vizag Steel Plant issue too may boomerang on it. Left with fewer options, the TDP is now staring at a possible washout in future in Vizag city.
