A family court in Mumbai ruled not allowing wife to wear kurt a and jeans apart from forcing her to wear a saree amounts to cruelty.
A woman brought to the notice of court that her husband hasn't bought her any clothes since their marriage in December 2012 and hence she purchased kurt a and jeans with her own salary. She complained her husband refused to allow her to wear them by saying she should prefer only sarees. She also told about the mental torture she suffered as her husband and in-laws harassed her to bring Rs 1 lakh from her parents and asked her to quit her job.
Dr Laxmi Rao who is a principal judge of family court granted divorce to the woman on grounds of cruelty under section 27(1)(d) of Special Marriage Act, 1954. The judge opined restricting a woman from wearing kurta and jeans could be treated as cruelty.
