A young political activist from a lower middle class family in a small Mahabubnagar village, Revanth Reddyâs rise has been meteoric. He started off as a ZPTC and today, he is the chief of the TPCC. What is interesting is that he has beaten odds when he fought for the ZPTC. Even when he has become the TPCC chief, he had to practically fight every inch of the way.
Revanth's journey too is as colourful. He began as an ABVP activist. Known for his dashing leadership qualities and rare aggression, Revanth was the blue-eyed boy of the RSS leaders in his student days. Later, he joined the TRS and sought a ZPTC ticket from Midgil in Mahabubnagar. The TRS leadership refused him a ticket. So, he contested as an independent and won. That's when the people started taking notice of him.
Later, he contested for the local body constituency in 2008 and won as an independent. This was his turning point. In 2009 and 2014, he won as the MLA from Kodangal on TDP ticket. That's when his association with Chandrababu Naidu firmed up. But, irrepressible Revanth soon opposed the political two-timing of leaders like Errabelli. Meanwhile, the infamous cash-for-vote scam happened and Revanth found himself arrested and on the dock. He was later made the working president of the TDP, but he could not last long as the fiery TDP of the past was a mere flicker now.
It was in this setting that he had joined the Congress. His rise in the Congress was very fast. Within four years of joining the party, he was first made working president and then the PCC chief. He had superseded the ambitions of several senior leaders to land in this position.
Revanth Reddy's dynamism, pro-active politics have attracted the attention of the Congress High Command and he soon became their blue-eyed boy. Now, he is taking over as the TPCC chief on Wednesday. He is making it a big affair to create a buzz around him. He has his task cut out. He has to pip past the BJP and then take on the Congress. He has to work hard to ensure that the Congress becomes the main opposition to the ruling TRS. Let's wait and see how he does it in the days to come.
